Style Diaries | Pink is the New Pink

“You got into Harvard Law?” “What? Like it’s hard?”

This weekend I found myself in a new city for the first time: Boston. I’ll be honest, it’s wasn’t a destination I’d pick for myself. But my dad wanted to “see a game at Fenway before he dies,” so we coordinated our trip around when their Sox played ours. As it was not my trip, I wasn’t interested in running all over + trying to fit everything in like I do basically every other time I travel. My list was short:

  • White Sox vs. Red Sox game
  • Visit Harvard + get a sweatshirt
  • See some historical sites
  • Boston Tea Party Tour (I’ll write another post about what we did in Boston. This is definitely a must-see!)
  • Eat chowder

That’s it. I’m not kidding. I’m going to Disney in two days for the day and all my sister Colleen + I will be doing is running. Needless to say, I needed this to be a relaxing vacation, whatever that is, even though I was with my parents.

So if you’re me + you’re going to Harvard, you’re going to need something pink. I love Legally Blonde far more than anyone ever should + I’m not sorry about it. One of the downsides to having lost 90 lbs over the last nine months is that I had absolutely nothing that fit the bill. So that meant it was time to shop, again. You’d be surprised to know that since college, I loathe shopping. It’s so stressful for me. Retail therapy does not exist in my vocabulary. So i started consulting one of my fashion icons, my friend Becca. Well I consulted her blog. I knew she’d recently written about the pink dress trend, including five for her favorites under $100. We’re all on a budget, but we can still be fierce. You can read her insights on this trend here. I discovered a Vince Camuto frock from Nordstrom Rack that I thought was cute but I didn’t love it. My rule is that if I don’t absolutely love it, I’m not buying it. If I don’t absolutely love it, I’m not going to wear it. So there it will hang in my closet or sit in a box when I cycle out clothes as seasons change. Contrary to what my father may tell you, I don’t like wasting money. So it was back to the drawing board.

No but really, it wasn’t hard. I just walked right in!

I happened to need to stop at Target, like I do at least three times a week. I was moved by nothing. Target can be hit or miss when you’re looking for something specific but not basic. It’s better to shop with an occasion in mind rather than the exact piece you need. So I went to my other old faithful: francesca’s. I came across an adorable pink dress in what I call a hybrid tank-halter style. I have several dresses cut this way + I like how they fit on me. I know francesca’s sizing so I knew what size I can grab off the rack, pay + be out the door in five minutes. I have shopping down to a science. It more closely aligns with my dad’s concept of “buying,” which astounds all of my friends. I went to three locations + none carried the dress. It wouldn’t arrive in time if I ordered it so I explored the racks, sure my Harvard outfit was here.

Sales girls at two locations brought me all the pink dresses they had + while I appreciate their out of the way efforts (likely because they were paid on commission), I still hadn’t found “the one.” And then, out of the corner of my eye, I glanced a pink ruffle. Pulling it off the rack, I found it: a cold shoulder romper in a not-neon hot pink. I’ve been wearing a ton of rompers this summer, much to my mom’s confusion. Two years ago I wouldn’t have been caught dead in one. This was it. This was what I was going to make my Legally Blonde dreams come true wearing. I could breathe easily. Aside from this romper + a shirt for the game, it didn’t matter what fell into my suitcase. I could breathe!

The textured polyester is breathable, comfortable + wrinkles easily but it’s nothing my steamer from Target can’t handle. Another discovery I made from my friend Becca. It’s an absolute game changer! Packing + getting ready in the morning will never be the same! I hate ironing + fluffing in the dryer isn’t always conducive. Now with just a quick breeze of my steamer, I’m good to go for vacations + work in just a few minutes. Best $20 spent on one non-wearable product. What’s your best outfit this summer been?
